Custom Web Development in Cairo: What to Expect
What custom web development means for a business in Cairo or elsewhere in Egypt: how it differs from a template, when it is worth it, what drives the cost, and what a good process looks like.

Short answer. Custom web development means the site or application is designed and coded for your business rather than assembled from a theme and plugins. In Egypt it is usually worth it when you need Arabic and English built properly, integrations with local payment or delivery providers, workflows a template cannot express, or a codebase you fully own. For a simple blog or a standard store, a template platform is often enough.
Search for a web development company in Cairo and you will find everything from one-person studios to large agencies, offering anything from a theme install to a full web application. This guide explains what "custom" should mean, when you need it, and how to tell a serious offer from a loose one.
Altruvex is a web studio in Cairo; this guide explains what custom development should include, whoever you hire.
Custom versus template
| Aspect | Template or theme | Custom build |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | An existing theme and plugins | Your requirements and content |
| Arabic and right-to-left | Depends on the theme; often added later | Designed into every layout from the start |
| Local integrations | Limited to the plugins that exist | Connected to the provider's own API |
| Speed to launch | Fast for standard needs | Slower to start; scoped to what you need |
| Long-term changes | Constrained by the theme and plugin updates | Changed in code you own |
| Ownership | You own content; the platform sets the rules | You own the code, repository and accounts |
Neither is always right. Our article on WordPress vs a custom website works through the decision in more detail, including when a template is the better choice.
When a custom build is worth it in Egypt
- You serve Arabic and English readers. A bilingual site needs separate URLs, right-to-left layouts and content written for each language. Retrofitting this onto a theme is where most problems start. See bilingual architecture.
- You need local integrations. Egyptian payment providers, bank transfer flows, delivery companies and SMS gateways each have their own requirements, and a plugin may not exist or may not be maintained.
- Your process is the product. Booking rules, quotation flows, dealer portals or internal dashboards that a template cannot express without workarounds.
- You handle personal data. Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law No. 151 of 2020 now has executive regulations, with a transition period for compliance (summary). Knowing exactly what your site collects and where it is stored is easier when you control the code. This is not legal advice; take your own.
- You want to own the system. The repository, documentation and accounts in your name, so any competent developer can continue the work.
What a good process looks like
Whoever you hire, you should be able to see the process before you sign. Ours has five phases, each with a defined part for you:
- Discovery: one session to agree goals, users, content, integrations and constraints. You share the context; local requirements are scoped here, not found at launch.
- Wireframe: the sitemap, page structure and key flows. You approve the structure before any visual work begins.
- Design: the visual design in both languages, which you approve.
- Development: the build. You review a live preview link as the build progresses.
- Launch: final checks, go-live and handover, once you approve the launch.
How long each phase takes is on the process page.
What drives the cost of a custom website in Egypt
We do not quote prices in articles, because a quote depends on scope. These are the factors that move it:
- Scope: the number of distinct page types and features, not the number of pages.
- Integrations: each payment, delivery, SMS or data system adds work and testing.
- Languages: a second language is real work in layout, content and search.
- Content readiness: content written from scratch takes longer than content that exists.
- Deadline: a fixed launch date can constrain how the work is scheduled.
Our ranges are published on the pricing page, and the transparency page shows how an estimate is calculated from these inputs. Local clients are invoiced in Egyptian pounds and international clients in US dollars.

What you should receive at handover
- The source code, in a repository in your account.
- The database schema and its migration history.
- A guide to environment settings and secrets.
- Deployment documentation, so another developer can release changes.
With us, ownership of the code passes to you at final payment.
Custom web development in Cairo: common questions
How do I choose a web development company in Cairo?
Look at live work you can open on your phone, talk to the person who will write the code, and get the process, ownership and support terms in writing. Our list of questions to ask before hiring a web developer covers each area.
Do you work with clients outside Cairo or outside Egypt?
Yes. The work is remote, so the process is the same wherever you are. Our FAQ covers how we work with international clients.
Can I start small and add features later?
Yes. A modular codebase lets you start with a contained website and add a CMS, integrations or dashboards later, each scoped and quoted on its own.
Can another developer maintain the site later?
They should be able to. That is what the handover documentation is for, and it is worth asking any company you consider.
